Service Projects

The Center for Prevention of Abuse

For many years our Club proudly supported the efforts of Dress for Success, a program which provided interview-appropriate attire for disadvantaged women entering or re-entering the workforce.  Once a job was secured, Dress for Success gave each woman a week's worth of suitable clothing.  Due to budget cuts in Illinois, this program no longer exists; therefore, our Club is now conducting an ongoing collection of gently used men's and women's clothing which will be donated to The Center for Prevention of Abuse, an organization which aims to help all people live free from violence and abuse.  The Center also needs pillows, twin size sheets and linens, personal hygiene items, toothpaste, toothbrushes, children's pajamas, baby wipes, hats and mittens, warm coats, bottled water and non-perishable food items.

Our members overwhelmingly supported this project in October, 2016, by donating more than a pickup truck full of items listed above.  Thanks to everyone who donated!

Local Food Pantry

Non-perishable food items are donated to Love in Action, Chillicothe's local food pantry, six months out of the year.  Our food items are combined with other donations from the community and are given out every Friday to those who have a need - the elderly on a fixed income; young families, single moms or dads with children; or those who are just down and out on their luck.  Approximately 100 families are helped every week.  Love in Action is very grateful for our members' generosity.

School Supplies

One of Altrusa's ongoing service areas is learning, and we believe having essential school supplies helps facilitate that learning.  For many years we supported District 321 schools and their students by providing hard goods - markers, paper, pens, pencils, erasers, etc.  Based on recent communications with each school's leadership, it was decided a better contribution would be gift cards.  That way teachers and administrators could purchase those items rarely donated by individuals and organizations yet required for students - things now necessary to prepare a student for success this century - which were not considered essential even five years ago.

Thanks to all members for their donations to this annual drive!

Our Club's major fundraiser is the sale of Terri Lynn products, and that sale ended February 14, 2017. How appropriate that someone purchased our last two bags of chocolate items on Valentine’s Day! We surpassed our sales goal; therefore, this year we’ll be able to provide three $1200 scholarships to deserving IVC high school seniors.  Thanks to Sarah Williamson and Linda Krider for chairing this project. A big thanks to club members and the community for their support.
